Dancing with Men in Skirts

So the John Burnet Hall Ball was Friday, and it was pretty much a riot. It was a masquerade ball at the Old Course Hotel (fancy right?--but don't get too excited, they quarantined us in the annex with a whole separate entrance than the rich golfers). But, yes, masquerade ball--a theme I would have been more excited for if I were not the only black person in the whole of John Burnet. So, given that the mask really wasn't going to serve an anonymizing purpose, I wore sunglasses instead. (Yes, I wore my sunglasses at night--because the sun never sets on the British empire--sorry, I couldn't help myself.)
And, because colonial eye-wear just wasn't enough to jazz up an Ann Taylor LBD, I threw on my Doc Martin inspired wellies as well. (Sadly, not a fashion statement, merely a practical move. It had snowed that afternoon and the ground was super icy, so I just carried my heels and changed there. Fortunately, the Old Course is across the street so the walk wasn't that bad and no Daisuke Takahashi-esque mishaps were had.) Tangentially, Johnny Weir was robbed.

But let's not get into that.

So, part of the ball was a Ceilidh (pronounced "kay-lee") so we did a lot of traditional Scottish dances which were really fun--and, to clarify, by "did" I mean us non-Scots "stumbled our way through." Fortunately, my Scottish friend Andrew led me through the Dashing White Sargent and Strip the Willow (my personal favorite), so my Ceilidh-fail was less epic than it would have been. Anywho, here are some other photos from the ball, sorry they're so blurry! (I hate shooting with flash, and people have an annoying tendency to move).

And also, for your edification and listening pleasure, a chuckle-worthy song about kilts.

Or not

In short, it was a good time.

And, in other news, Trinh has politely reminded me to get my shit together, so (hopefully) I'll have some fun things for you to read later on this week!
